چکیده
In this paper we show how to derive the mean and variance of the transilluminated signal obtained in models of light propagation in tissue, based both on a stochastic Monte Carlo method and on a deterministic diffusion approximation. The theoretical treatment of the Monte Carlo model applies only to integrated intensity measurements, whereas the diffusion approximation gives an estimator for the time-dependent case as well. We present results that show the accurate prediction of Monte Carlo statistics, and propose that the diffusion approximation is therefore a suitable mechanism for incorporating noise into modelling procedures.

Measurement of changes in optical pathlength through human muscle during cuff occlusion on the arm
Concentration changes of haemoglobin and cytochromes indicative of tissue perfusion and oxygenation can be quantitatively evaluated from near-infrared (NIR) measurements of absorption and optical pathlength through tissue. The accuracy of such measurements is limited as current bedside instrumentation cannot measure optical pathlength. Using a recently developed phase-resolved spectroscopic tec...

We have used an intensity modulated optical spectrometer, which measures the phase shift across tissue experienced by intensity modulated near-infrared light, to determine the absolute optical pathlength through tissue. The instrument is portable and takes only 5 s to record pathlength at four wavelengths (690 nm, 744 nm, 807 nm and 832 nm). The absolute pathlength divided by the known spacing ...

Diffuse near-infrared tomography of tissue can provide intrinsically useful information about total hemoglobin, oxygen saturation, water and cytochromes within tissue, yet to extract this information spectral data is required at many wavelengths. In this study, we examine a new approach to using multispectral continuous wave measurements through tissue along with second-derivative data analysis...

A concise theoretical treatment is developed for the calculation of mean time, differential pathlength, phase shift, modulation depth and integrated intensity of measurements of light intensity as a function of time on the surface of tissue, resulting from either the input of picosecond light pulses, or radio frequency-modulated light. The treatment uses the Green's function of the diffusion ap...
متن کاملEstimation of optical pathlength through tissue from direct time of flight measurement.
Quantitation of near infrared spectroscopic data in a scattering medium such as tissue requires knowledge of the optical pathlength in the medium. This can now be estimated directly from the time of flight of picosecond length light pulses. Monte Carlo modelling of light pulses in tissue has shown that the mean value of the time dispersed light pulse correlates with the pathlength used in quant...
